I am not speaking from theory.
I have sat with women who left marriages at 35. Thirty-six. Thirty-four. The table at the kitchen at midnight, the one glass of wine that became two because that was not the kind of conversation that ends in one. The long version of the story that nobody gets to hear except another woman who will not flinch at the complexity of it. The part where you say "I still loved him" and it is true and also not the point.
Over years of having these conversations, a pattern in the chart became visible. Not the same chart. Different women, different stories, different men, different kinds of inadequacy or harm or simple mismatch. But a transit pattern that showed up consistently enough to be worth naming.
The Saturn opposition.
What the Saturn Opposition Is
The Saturn opposition is not famous in the way the Saturn return is. The Saturn return, when Saturn completes its full orbit and returns to the position it occupied at your birth around ages 28-30, gets the press coverage and the cultural awareness. The Saturn opposition, which occurs at the halfway point of that cycle around ages 37-40, is quieter. Less talked about. In some ways more disruptive.
At the Saturn opposition, transiting Saturn occupies the sign exactly opposite your natal Saturn. This produces a particular quality of pressure: the structures you have built since your Saturn return are now being weighed against a question that Saturn opposition asks with some insistence. The question is: is this structure actually serving you, or are you serving the structure?
The Saturn opposition is the midlife transit that is actually doing the most work in the 35-42 window. Not everyone talks about it. Most people feel it.

Why 35 Specifically (and Why It Varies)
The exact timing depends on natal Saturn's position, which is different for every person. Saturn moves through a sign in approximately two and a half years. Women born when natal Saturn was in the earlier degrees of a sign will hit the opposition earlier, closer to 37. Women born when natal Saturn was in the later degrees will hit it closer to 40.
The women I have seen leave marriages at 33 or 34 were often already in the Saturn opposition shadow: the approaching period before the exact opposition, where the transit's themes are building but the exact pressure has not yet peaked. The women who left at 39 or 40 were often responding to the opposition at its most exacting.
The window is 33-42, with the peak pressure occurring between 37 and 40 for most people. The specific age of 35 is where the decision most often gets made, because there is often a year or two between when the awareness arrives and when the action follows.
What the Transit Feels Like
The Saturn opposition does not announce itself as "this is a transit." It announces itself as a question that will not leave.
Women in this transit describe a specific quality of restlessness that is different from ordinary unhappiness. They are not necessarily more unhappy than they were two years earlier. They are less willing to wait. Something in the structure of the life as it exists has become unacceptable in a way it was not before. Not always worse. Sometimes the marriage improved in the same period. The question is not "is this bad enough to leave." The question is: is this mine?
The Saturn opposition asks whether the life you have built is built on your actual foundations or on what was available at the time, on what was expected of you, on the person you were before you knew what you actually needed. It is not cruel in its asking. It is just thorough.
Women with Saturn in relationship houses, including the 5th, 7th, and 8th, often feel the opposition most acutely through the relationship structures. The marriage becomes the site of the question. This does not mean the marriage caused the question. The question would have arrived somewhere.
The Pluto Factor
Women in their mid-to-late thirties born between 1979 and 1985 are also in the range of Pluto entering or moving through Aquarius, which is creating a generational transit layer on top of the Saturn opposition. This is not universal. It depends on natal Pluto's position. But for women in this cohort, the Saturn opposition is not the only transit doing work. Pluto dismantles what is no longer structurally sound.
The combination of Saturn opposition and Pluto aspecting natal placements in the same multi-year window is the chart scenario I have seen most consistently behind the women who left at 35.
What the Transit Does Not Mean
The Saturn opposition is not a mandate to leave. Not every woman who goes through a Saturn opposition exits a marriage. Many use the transit to rebuild the marriage, to renegotiate it, to say the thing that had not been said and find out whether what comes back is enough to stay for.
The transit is a pressure for honest reckoning. The reckoning can go several directions.
What the transit does not support is maintaining the status quo through sheer inertia, without choosing it. That is the one thing the Saturn opposition reliably dismantles: the life that continues because no one made a decision to continue it. It forces the question. What you do with the question is yours.
For Women Who Recognize This
If you are in this window, late thirties, something shifting in a way that does not feel like ordinary unhappiness, a question that keeps showing up about whether the life you are living is actually the life you chose, that is the Saturn opposition working.
You do not have to leave. You do not have to stay. You do have to decide, and the transit is making it harder to postpone the deciding.
The women I know who have been through this describe the same thing on the other side: a feeling of being more settled in their own choices, not because the choices were easy, but because they were finally actually made. The Saturn opposition is thorough. It is also fair. It is not asking you to blow up a good life. It is asking you to know the difference between a good life and a comfortable structure you have never fully chosen.
That is worth knowing.
If you are in this window and want to see where Saturn is in your natal chart and what transits are currently active, the reading maps the patterns specific to your placements, not the general window, but your specific timing.
